Foozie Awards 2017: The Winners

It’s that time of year again, to reflect on the highs and lows of Bristol’s foodie and boozie scene over the course of 2017. And what a year it has been! From an unprecedented amount of new bar and restaurant openings to the loss of some businesses that we’re really going to miss. It has definitely been an exciting year to be a foodie in Bristol, that’s for sure.


It’s also time for us to highlight some of the businesses that we feel set the benchmark, went over and above and made us go moist – it’s the 2017 Foozie Awards.


As with last years Foozie awards we won’t be holding a fancy ceremony, no public voting and no big marketing campaign. We’re keeping it really simple (which isn’t like us!) and have chosen winners based on our own experiences and the voices within the food community. So, here are our stars of 2017 – the best of the best!

It changed overnight without much warning but since Root opened it has garnered nothing but rave reviews for its forward thinking approach to food (primarily vegetables with meat side dishes) whilst still keeping its sustainable ethos. Head chef Rob Howell has been wowing us with his dishes and we think Root thoroughly deserves the crown for the best new opening.

We love what the team at Box-E have created in their little corner of Cargo. This small crate not only serves delicious dishes served with flair from head chef Elliot, but wife Tess is also on hand to offer a truly personable experience in this fantastic restaurant. The service and the warm, friendly atmosphere only add to the wonderment of the food – and it is truly special.

BEST CASUAL DINING: Jamaica Street Stores

Whilst Jamaica Street Stores is a relative newcomer to the Bristol food and drink scene, we have been super impressed with it since opening. The large restaurant is relaxed and chilled, with the open kitchen banging out some awesome food. The fried chicken dish has made a name for itself all on its own but the Sunday roasts are also cracking and the 3 dishes for £10 lunch deal is hard to beat.

We at Foozie have long been fans of Poco in Stokes Croft, because we think it has it all. It’s a great spot to grab a coffee, perfect for that casual lunch and lovely to get a group of friends together and visit for dinner. The team are all really friendly and the food speaks for itself. Poco work really hard to be as ethical and sustainable as possible and take lots of steps to shine a light on how to do this in Bristol, we have got a lot of admiration for that.

BEST BAR: The Gallimaufry

The Galli is a place that we could’ve awarded in so many categories. It is a fantastic bar, but also a lovely place to hangout and not forgetting the consistently amazing food. The standards never slip and this is one of the many reasons it is so popular. A true Bristolian gem, the Galli feels like home – relaxed, comfortable and with good vibes.

We just had to award this to one of our favourite local Bristol boozers because The Bank always comes up trumps when you are talking about a Sunday roast. Ever popular, the pub offers a quality Sunday lunch that is delicious, generous and reasonably priced. It has all the trappings of a quality, classic pub and we love how welcoming and friendly the team are here.

BEST EVENT: Bristol Food Tour


Foozie has has always been about celebrating the wealth of amazing Bristol independents within our fantastic food and drink scene. So we wanted to award our Best Event to The Bristol Food Tour – because they also do exactly that. Championing our culinary greats, they have created a fun and tasty food tour, in which attendees can sample delicious food offerings whilst also learning more about the businesses and the people behind them. We love the idea and look forward to bigger and better things for the team come 2018.

BEST POP-UP: Tsukemono @ The Volunteer Tavern

Next Pop-up TBC 


This month long residency from the guys at Tsukemono was met with rave reviews from customers who loved the teams take on Japanese cuisine. Tsukemono only launched this year but proved to be incredibly popular when they popped up at The Volunteer Tavern in Bristol’s city centre and also completed a few stints at the BS5 Market. They also have big plans for 2018 – so watch this space.

BEST SUPPER CLUB: Bishopston Supper Club

Having recently celebrated their 7th birthday – we thought the Bishopston Supperclub was a deserved winner of our award. Danielle has put on many Sunday roast dinner events alongside other private catering jobs and experimental dinners. The events are always a sell out (a testament to her cooking) and her dedication to this long running club clearly lies within her passion. We managed to get away with some rum truffles too which were incredible!

Another really tricky category to narrow down due to Bristol’s booming beer scene and how much it has taken off in 2017 was best Brewery. We decided to hand it to the guys at Moor Beer; they have been going strong for ten years and know their stuff and are always supportive of other Bristol brewers – not forgetting, their beer is experimental and unforgettable.

We couldn’t come to a unanimous decision when it came to crowning our Best Bristol take away. The truth is, there are just too many amazing options and we as a team, all couldn’t settle on one clear winner. So we took the vote public and Oowee Diner came out on top! These delicious, dirty burgers and fries are epic and we are so pleased to see the gang settling into their new site. They are the winners for two years in a row now, well done guys!


There is nothing much left to do now apart from to look forward to all the exciting things to come in 2018, we’ve got a feeling it’s going to be tastier than ever!
